![]() Microsoft Defender is pretty good at detecting malware files, blocking exploits and network-based attacks, and flagging phishing sites. There are many reasons to like Windows Defender - especially as Microsoft has worked really hard to improve it over the last few years. TRY NORTON NOW (60 DAYS RISK-FREE) So, Is Microsoft Defender Antivirus Good Enough? In short, Windows Defender might well be good enough, but it certainly isn’t the best, especially compared to brands like Norton that offer more effective malware scanners, more intuitive Windows apps, and more advanced cybersecurity protections. This stands in stark contrast to paid options like Norton or Bitdefender, which provide heaps of extras. As many techies will tell you, Windows Defender keeps millions of PCs the world over safe.īut Windows Defender is miserably lacking in extra features, including a few that are essential when it comes to enhancing privacy, like a VPN and effective web protections. It’s simple to use and blocks the vast majority of malware. ![]() ![]() But how does it compare to the premium antiviruses offered by third parties? I’ll be taking a look at the costs and benefits of using Windows Defender over a paid antivirus.įor some people, Windows Defender is indeed good enough. Windows Defender is the default security tool on every Windows PC. It has higher virus detection rates, better web protection, more additional security features, a more intuitive interface, and coverage for more platforms and operating systems. Better than Windows Defender in every way. I just wanted to upgrade in 2014 from my older computer because I had the money to afford a better one.Short on time? Here’s the best Windows Defender alternative: : Thought I'd been using it on three different PC's. But I've had the same PC for seven years, with some minor upgrades, and it's still running fine with no viruses or issues. So yeah, long story short, I've been using Bitdefender, and yes I pay for it. Which would inherently make it more vulnerable to attacks than others. But I have to remind myself that since MS is the most commonly used OS in the world, it stands to reason that Windows Defender is the most used AV in the world therefore it would make sense that it would be the most targeted AV software. Because it has MicroSoft Money behind it. I believe Windows Defender has gotten quite a bit better, and it honestly is probably the best free AV solution at this point. I was using AVG, and Windows Defender, as well as Pandasoft at some point on the PC's that were so completely screwed that it was less stressful to just abandon them and get a new computer.īut after 10 years plus with Bitdefender, I haven't had any issues. Now that may just sound like a rock that keeps away tigers. It's hard to prove that I would've been infected if I hadn't had Bitdefender, but after losing two PC's pretty much completely to what I assume were rootkits, in addition to malware and viruses in the 2000's, I didn't want to take any chances. ![]() So far, no issues with viruses, malware, or anything whatsoever. I am a likeminded individual.īut yeah, I've been using Bitdefender for over a decade, across two different PC's, my laptop, and I had some extra licenses throughout so I've put it on my Mom's laptops and her PC. It's saved my bacon on numerous occasions.Īh, I see you're a man of exquisite tastes Mr. Most of these are easy to spot and unsophisticated but they take advantage of people's lack of knowledge. ![]() Passable av software is important but honestly most security threats people bring on themselves going to dodgy sites and falling for scams. I got into Windows eventually to find mcaffee using 75% of an i7 cpu. It was performing so bad i thought the hard drive was grinding itself into powder. Worst case of resource hogging security software i ever saw was mcaffee on an i7 laptop 5 or 6 years ago. Sometimes requiring the use of dedicated removal tools. Both of those i can also vouch are usually bigger resource hogs and more prone to causing performance and other technical problems. It was certainly above the other big two free ones Avast and AVG. Now such scores are never definitive for obvious reasons but it is none the less impressive. The last independent test I saw about a year ago, Windows Defender scored 100%. Someone once described Windows Defender as using a chain-link fence to protect yourself from a swarm of angry wasps . ![]()
